Small miracles ✨😊

Hello friends!!!

I want to start by saying. This schedule. is catching up to me. I was very tired this week. But that didn’t stop me from having fun and finding people!!

AND. I have officially been in SD for a month!! Woot woot! Super fun stuff! We also hear cop cars at least twice a day. The joys of El Cajon! 🚔

AND. The weather has cooled down. thank goodness!! It has been like 70/75 since Wednesday! So were vibin with weather rn

We’re gonna start with bad news. James said he doesn’t think the church is for him 😭 . So so sad. But he still wants to be friends. And he is still reading the bom, is still going to attend church, and attending all the other extra activities we invite him to. The only thing is that he doesn’t believe in Christ. And we are hoping and praying that one day it’ll just click. And then he’ll get baptized. So that’s what’s goin on with James.

Good news. We had Zone pday!!!! So lit. It was quite fun!! We played elementary school games. Played some sign, some heads up seven up, did a kahoot to see who’s smarter than a fifth grader (my team got second), had some delsh snacks, and played some tag. My district went to a thrift store before that and we got each other goofy outfits. So that was exciting! And then after zone pday my district went to a members house and we played some games!

Some random stories for you… We were knocking on Thursday. Some lady had the whole squishmallow collection of nightmare before Christmas characters and some other halloween characters and I gasped so loud. I prolly scared her bc of how aggressive my gasp was. But I was jealous. They were so so perfect. Anyways. She said we could stop back by and talk to her boyfriend!🤗

Same day, later in the evening around 6:30. We were knocking. And we knock into this lady, she first tells us no she’s a Christian scientist. Had no idea what that was. But then she started asking us questions about ourselves and started getting to know us. And then she tells us to come inside and she basically gave us a house tour of the two rooms that were in the house. And she tells us her whole life story. She’s been like, ALL around the world. And she asked me if I knew an Irish language. And I said shawty. I know I’m ginger but I don’t speak ginger. Anyways. At that moment I wish I could pull out my Scottish accent. Not the point, we were over there for 45 min. Just talking to this lady about her life history. And Sis Heaton is awesome and told her abt family history. It was so goooodddd. But it went right over the lady’s head. But that’s ok. And then she gave us water and let us go. Then me and Sis Heaton ran through sprinklers 😄. That was lots of fun!!

Elder Ure gave us milk in a bag. The most uncomfy thing every. But Elder Johnston thought it was the funniest thing ever.

And we visited Hani again!! We will prolly go back and read the bom in Arabic with him for Sis Heaton to get better at her Arabic.

We had a couple finding miracles this week! On Wednesday we were visiting a grey dot that we’ve been trying to get a hold of. And her son answered and we asked if we could share a message and he was like yeah! And so we shared a verse with him, and he told us that he is wanting to get closer to god and build his relationship!! And he said we could come back!! Yay! So we will visit him again this week!

There’s another dot, Christian, who we have also been trying to meet with, and we finally had a set time. We taught him the restoration and gave him a bom and asked him to read a chapter and pray about it. He was like super into it, and he said he would be happy to meet with us again and learn more! So we will have to find another time, but he seems very promising!

Friday we had a cute little event we went to at 7 at the Mormon Battalion. Elder Hancock asked us at 5pm if we could make a finding goal. And we didn’t see the message till 5:50. And we said bruh. Come on now. And we were like we have 30 min to find someone. Can we do it?? We said yes. And so we called people for like 20 min trying to get someone to answer and get a return date. And finally this guy Orlando answered. He said he’s in and out of SD bc of his job. And so I asked if I could share a scripture. And I shared the verse of the day (life saver and always a good scripture. u should start using verse of the day 👍🏿) And asked him how he sees God. And then he told us that if we called back he would answer and talk with us!! And we. Screamed. Like literally. Cheered for joy in the car! It was so awesome. So we will be calling him again probably Friday!

We had a member referral bc apparently she is having a hard time repenting. So we visited her, and she is lowkey so chill. She is a cop, and she has a really strong testimony. So idk why she’s not going to church. But me and Sis Heaton will def go back next week! Super exciting things.

Sis Heaton and I have a moto of “one step at a time / baby steps.” Because we have been doing things one step at a time. For getting me more comfortable doing things, and just for getting us as a companionship more comfortable with random things. One thing we did this week is visit a member that hasn’t been to church in a while. She lives in this weird group home right next to the church. And we’ve been told to go over there. The first time we did we got scared and left. So we didn’t even see her. The second time we went was on Saturday. And we said we are going in there. And we did. It was lowkey so sketch. But we met this member. Her name is Vanessa. And she was sweet. We invited her to church and she came!!! HIZZA!! We were so happy about it. That is just a fun fear we conquered this last week.

There was an Inspire event. Which is a cute little music event that is out at the Mormon Battalion! It gave the same vibe as a middle school choir concert, but with missionaries and more audience interaction. It was fun and cute. 10/10 recommend 👍! James went and he gave me and Sis Heaton cokes!!! So happy! Anyways. That was fun.

We had a finding blitz on Saturday. That was exciting. Sis Wing joined Sis Heaton and I. LOVE SIS WING!!! We literally just knocked doors for an hour and a half. So not super excited tbh. But it was good. Sis Heaton thinks they’re useless. I agree. Respectfully. Nobody was really found. But that’s ok.

GO PADRES!!! ⚾️🧢🥳

Hello friends!!!!
We had the opportunity to go to a Padres game this week as a mission. And it was quite the blast. Only issue I had tho. Is the Padres lost. In the LAST inning. Long story short they were winning 3-0 the whole game and in the last inning Detroit decided to get a grand slam, and so then we lost 3-4. Quite unfortunate, but it was still a lot of fun. Missionaries got put on the jumbo tron, we all went crazy it was so funny.

We went bowling on Monday, and got In N Out. That was a good time.

Had dinner with some members. Had spaghetti and some busting Garlic bread. With some yummy apple pie 🥧

There is a lady that wants to meet with us. And she has a CD that she wants us to watch. We’re pretty sure she just wants to bash us abt the BoM. So we will see where that goes.

We had interviews with President and his wife. That went well. In the interview with pres we walked around the gym and he asked me some question. He had some good things to say. There were yummy snacks as well 😋.

Tell me why it’s been 105⁰ outside. Literally, so toasty. According to Domonique this is just a couple day thing. I don’t remember what he called it, but this doesn’t last long. The temp goes down to 90 on Tuesday, and then 80 on Wednesday, and then down to 70/75 on Thursday. And it’ll stay in the 70s. So we are almost there.

We made a friend, Josiah, last Sunday. And we have had a couple lessons with him.  We’re gonna try and get him baptized. He’s in 10th grade and he’s funny.

In our ultimate finding week. We went to a car show, talked with Harry (the goat 🐐), talked to people at the trolley, and went to the mall. The car show was my fav, but the others were good too. It got us thinking abt how we can better start convos.

We did not beat the elders. But we did find a lot of people, and I now have an album of the elders in action and I think it is the funniest thing ever.

If you were wanting to know how James’s baptism went. It didn’t happen 😕. He decided he wasn’t ready, we told him to pray for a new date. Not sure if he’s done that yet. But we will pray with him next time we have a lesson.
ALSO. He doesn’t believe in Christ. He hasn’t told us this but we can assume. We will still teach him and try to get him to understand why it is crucial that Christ performed the atonement. So hopefully we can get him to understand more.

The power generator blew out at the church. And we lost power. So we can’t get into the church and it’s gonna be like super hot in there and someone said it won’t be fixed for a week. Hopefully it gets fixed sooner than later.

Spiritual thought— Verse of the day

Helaman 13:11: “But if ye will repent and return unto the Lord your God I will turn away mine anger, saith the Lord; yea, thus saith the Lord, blessed are they who will repent and turn unto me, but wo unto him that repenteth not.

It is super important that we repent and we turn to the lord. Please turn to God and he will bless you!

I love hearing from yall! Hope you’re staying cool!! 😎🥶

Hand Surgery

Isaac was fairly content this morning waiting for surgery.  Of course once he realized we were not giving him a bottle his attitude changed a bit.  We spoke to his Plastic Surgeon, Dr. French, before surgery and she said she had been thinking a lot about Isaac.  She wasn’t certain that he needed to have a palate repair at this time.  Isaac makes it hard for anyone to get a good look at the back of his mouth.  We decided to have her get a good look at his palate after being put under and determine if he in fact needed a repair.

Early morning bed head

We were able to take Isaac back to the OR around 8:15am.  We then went to sit in the waiting area, knowing we’d hear from Dr. French or the OR Nurse on whether or not the palate surgery was taking place.  Well about 15 minutes later Dr. French came out to let us know that she got a good look at his palate and he does not need palate repair at this time.  What a relief, this kid can still enjoy his bottles.  His bottles are his comfort and had he had his palate repaired he would not be able to have a bottle for 2 to 3 weeks.  Prayers have been answered!!  Heavenly Father sure has an interesting way of testing us, as this is the second time we’ve prepared ourselves for a surgery and it was not needed.  It definitely proves to us that his Doctors are providing the best care for Isaac and his development.

As for his Syndactyly release, Dr. Scott released his pinkies today.  We had thought it would be his index fingers, but he decided to start with his pinkies.  His hands are wrapped in Coban and he will keep those on for 3 weeks.  We originally were told he would have full casts.  We will not need to do dressing changes for the first 3 weeks.

Since Isaac only had hand surgery today, we are able to go home after spending a couple of hours being monitored in recovery from anesthesia.  We are excited to start 2016 outside of the Hospital!

Fight Like an Eagar

I had my last treatment of chemotherapy today.    I was a bit nervous I wasn’t going to be able to get it as I spent the weekend in the hospital.

I am so ready to start healing and returning my body to normal, if there is such a thing! Hoping the next few days are nothing like last week.

My last chemotherapy treatment

After my treatment last Tuesday I felt pretty good and then by Wednesday afternoon I had nausea and was vomiting.  I could not keep anything down.  Zane took me to the ER on Friday night.  They ran labs and my kidney function was low and my magnesium was low.  I ended up being transferred to the hospital and admitted.  Saturday morning my potassium was  very low, to the point that I was .1 away from it being critical.  I was given 6 bags of potassium on Saturday and labs were done again.  After all that potassium my numbers only went up by .1. I had another 6 bags overnight.  Sunday morning my potassium had come up, so I was able to take pills instead of doing the infusions, but my magnesium was low.  By the afternoon my numbers had come up enough that they gave me the ok to go home.  So, Zane brought me home Sunday evening.

Here I was in the ER. I had some major dark circles under my eyes.

I will be getting my abdominal port out on Friday, but I will be keeping the chest port in for the time being.  I will need to have bloodwork done each week to check my chemistry.  If my levels are low, I will have to go in to the infusion center and receive whatever is low.  I will also be getting Scans done again in 3 months.

I feel like I can’t thank everyone enough for their support.  If there is one thing that we (Zane and I, especially Zane) usually don’t do, is ask for help.  We have no problem giving of ourselves to help others, especially Zane.  So many of you have just stepped up and didn’t give us a chance to say “no, we’re ok” and for that we are extremely grateful.  I feel so blessed to have such wonderful Family and Friends.  Thank You and We Love You!!

I’m posting the link to the shirt fundraiser if anyone is interested.

There is a Finish Line!

Last Friday I went in for a scan.  My Oncologist decided to have me do scans before my last round so that I can have my ports taken out soon after I’m done with my last treatment.  I was a little nervous of how the outcome would be.  I am so happy to say I received a call back that my scans were clean!  Hallelujah!!  Many prayers have been answered!  We are so thankful for all the outpouring of love and support we have been shown!!!

Today I am starting my last round/cycle of chemo.  So, next week I should be having my last treatment.  What a relief to be coming to an end.  Each week of chemo has brought its challenges.  About halfway through my abdominal port leaked after treatment.  I went back to see the radiologist who put the port in.  He checked the port by injecting a dye in while I was under X-ray.  The port turned out to be fine, no kinks or leaks within the catheter.  Thank goodness.

After the first treatment of my 5th round I had the worst nausea and could not hold anything down for a couple days.  I couldn’t even keep my anti nausea meds down to help.  That was probably the worst week I have had since starting treatment.  By that Friday I was finally able to keep food down.  Thank goodness for my Mom, who came to the rescue to tend to me and help with the kids!  Sure do Love her!

The following treatment came with excitement as well.  I slept through quite a bit of it, but when I was done I got up to go to the restroom and felt off.  I looked at my abdomen in the mirror and realized it was lopsided.  All the chemo and saline was all on the right side of my abdomen.  Ahhh, what the heck.  I showed the nurse, who didn’t seem to concerned at first but then told me to call my Oncologist if I had any problems.  She was definitely concerned, because she called my Oncologists office the remainder of the week to see if I had called in.  A few days after chemo I got a rash on the right side of my abdomen.  I assumed it would go away quickly.  Well, it was still bothering me after the weekend, so I went in to see my Oncologist.  She thought it looked like a contact dermatitis, but her Nurse Practitioner was concerned it could be shingles.  What???  That I do not need in my life at this point.  We kept an eye on it, I took allergy meds, and the rash got better each day.

I received this amazingly beautiful quilt from some good friends!!  What a thoughtful gift that will be treasured for a long time!  Thank you Carla, Amber, and Megan!

I love checking the mail and getting motivating cards, letters, and drawings!  Thank you!!!

Over The Hump!

This past Tuesday I had my second treatment of my 4th round.  I officially have 2 rounds left.  I should be done with my last treatment at the end of September.

After my 3rd round it still felt like I had a long way to go to see then end of treatment.  Now that my 4th round is over it feels so good to be past halfway.  The first treatment of each round is usually the worse, I just feel worse after the first treatment.  For the most part I have the nausea under control.  My stomach usually just hurts a few days after and there is not much relief.  Food doesn’t taste the same.  I have also felt pins and needles in my hands and feet, and in my face sometimes.  The second treatment is a bit easier to take and my week off also follows it.

My blood counts have been good throughout treatment.  The only things that fluctuate are my Magnesium and Potassium.  All in all I have been doing well going through chemotherapy.

I did go in to see my primary Doctor about my thyroid.  She sent me to have an ultrasound done, which showed a small nodule on the right side.  So, my Doctor sent me in to have a thyroid biopsy done.  The first time I went in to have it done, the Radiologist that was to do it was looking at my ultrasound and felt that the nodule was so small that it would be nothing to worry about.  They decided not to make my neck a pin cushion and sent me on my way.  Well, my primary Doctor really wanted me to have the biopsy done, so I was back a few weeks later and this time the biopsy was completed.  I am happy to say that the results came back benign.

Zane and I at my first treatment of my 4th round!

I was trying on hats at my last chemo treatment!  I mostly just go bald, but my nurse kept insisting I look at their box of hats.

Isaac has been doing great.  There was a concern a few weeks after we brought him home.  Part of his incision had opened up and the surgeons were concerned that it wouldn’t heal on its own.  They had contemplated going back in and closing it up and possibly taking out the plate that was in that area.  They decided to give him another week to see if his body would heal up and avoid another surgery.  Well, he must not want to go into surgery because the incision healed and the following week we were in they were able to remove the stitches.  He does still have his Broviac Line and is still getting heavy antibiotics every night infused through the line.  He will continue with the infusion antibiotics until his next surgery.  He will be having surgery on his palate and his first finger release in about a month or two.  We are still waiting to hear from the scheduler on a date.

Isaac loves to play the iPad or iPhone.  His favorite is to play the piano app.  He is great at sitting up.  He loves toys that spin.  He is working on crawling.  We bribe him with the iPad and he will work his way to it, in an army crawl his own style.  You never realize how much you take your kids milestones for granted until you have a child that all these milestones are a BIG deal.  Well, Isaac, he is a bit of a BIG deal around here.

The Craniofacial department has a camera that takes a 3D picture.  These next two pictures show a comparison of Isaac’s head from the beginning of May, before his last surgery.  The pictures on the right are from May and the pictures on the left are from a few weeks ago.  You can really tell a difference in the shape of his head.

Home

Isaac came home Monday night!  I should have posted this already.

He had surgery on Sunday.  The surgeon went back in and cleaned up the infection in his head.  It went well and he was able to come home Monday evening.  He is on an IV antibiotic, which means every night we administer his antibiotic medicine through his Broviac line.  It has made life much easier for him to be home.

This was my off week of chemotherapy!  It has been very nice.  I still have the weird head feeling, which hasn’t been figured out, but I was on top of the nausea this time.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow….

Isaac Update:

He is still in the PICU.  The breathing tube was taken out earlier today.  They also took out 2 of the five, yes you read that right five, IV’s.  He has been doing great.  Zane was able to hold him today.  He was able to have bottles throughout the day, which always brightens his mood.  He was given a blood transfusion this evening, which is the main reason he was kept in the PICU.

Before I left the hospital last night we told the nurse that Isaac is strong willed and does not appreciate tubes or masks on his face, so if he stirs or wakes he may try to go for the breathing tube.  This made her nervous, so she decided to restrain his arms just in case.  They did continue to give him morphine throughout the evening to keep him calm.

This morning Zane told me that the nurse caught Isaac trying to pull his breathing tube out with his feet.

Zane sent me these pictures.  The first two are from last night and the third one is from today.

On a lighter note Zane came home to give me a new style today.  I thought I was going to get emotional when he started shaving my head, but it was easier then expected.  It does throw me off when I walk into the bathroom and see my new reflection.  The mohawk was shaved off after we took pictures.

I was trying to be serious!!

Cranial Surgery #2

We are at Children’s Hospital today for Isaac’s surgery.  He is having his posterior distractors removed and a frontal/orbital advancement to correct his bilateral coronal craniostynosis.  Whew! So, what exactly does that mean?  Well, they will first remove the hardware in his head that was placed to do his posterior distraction.  They will then cut and remove his frontal bone to reshape it and create a brow bone for eye protection.  They will adjust his eyes a little if possible.  Finally, they will hold the work together with hardware that is absorbable.  It may take a year to eighteen months for his body to fully absorb them.

This is kind of bittersweet, as Isaac’s look will change with this surgery.  I took pictures of him yesterday, to have before pictures!  This boy is the highlight of our day, he is so content to play on the floor and roll around.  He smiles and chuckles at nothing in particular (he must find his thoughts comical), he is quite ticklish in his legs, and he loves to laugh for Zane.  Isaac is Amazing!!

Isaac was supposed to go back for surgery at 11:30, but because of delays he did not go back to the OR until after 1:30.  Since Isaac is 12 months we were able to carry him back to the OR and lay him on the operating table.  We had to give him our goodbyes and kisses before they put him under, but we were excited that we were able to take him back.  I expected it to be harder to leave him, but he didn’t fuss or put up a stink.  It’s like he was saying, “go, I’ve got this and I’ll be taken care of.”

We received a call from the nurse around 4pm to let us know that it took a bit longer to get all his lines and prep work done prior to the actual operation.  So, surgery started about 3:30.  They had scheduled his surgery for 6 hours, so we may be waiting a while.

Here are a few of the pictures I took yesterday!

Clearly he was over his photo shoot

Chemotherapy Day 8

Yesterday I showed up for my second treatment of chemotherapy, but it is my 8th day since I started.  What a day it has been, not completely awful but not great.

I arrive and check in, order what I think I’ll eat for lunch (did I mention I love food), pick a recliner, and wait for my nurse to draw blood.  Next, we wait for the lab results and the go ahead for me to get my chemotherapy medicine.  Today was a close call, my blood counts were fine, but my sodium and potassium were low.  I really need to do better with my fluid intake.  I was given the go ahead, so my orders were put in with the Pharmacist.  Today was supposed to be a shorter day since I would only be gettin Paclitaxel through the IP port.  Last week I received Paclitaxel in my IV port.  However, the Pharmacist had an emergency drug order that came in, so I had to wait a little bit for my meds.  I was done by 2:30, it’s not like I had somewhere else I needed to be.

My lunch came and I was not able to eat as much as I planned.  Food is starting to taste slightly different.  This treatment I decided to listen to music and I was able to does off for a little bit.  I probably slept 20 minutes, but it felt like hours.

After my meds were done they unhooked me, it was tough to stand up, feeling so heavy with about 2 liters of fluid in my abdomen.  It’s terrible walking out of chemo like you’re pregnant, not so much the way it looks, but the tightness from the fluid😏.  One of these days I’ll have Zane take a before and after picture.  Maybe I’ll wear that cute countdown maternity shirt I made when I was pregnant with Isaac. 😂

So far I feel ok, I’ve been keeping up on the anti nausea medicines and try to sleep and get rest.  Last week it was about Sat & Sun that were the roughest for me.  So, I’m hoping to see if I can do better this week.

Sorry, I forgot to take a picture while at treatment yesterday!  So here’s a picture of my “sunshine” mug one of my B.F.F’s game me!!

Next treatment is scheduled for June 30, which will be Round 2.
